Obtaining Excellent Auto Body Repair Work

If your car has scratches, dents, rust or collision damage, it’s time for auto body repair. Take your car to the auto body shop and get an estimate of the cost for the work that must be done to restore your car to its original condition. The estimate will include labor and parts if needed.

If the damage to your car can be repaired with tools, you won’t need new parts to be ordered. That will mean you overall costs should be low. But if they’ll need to replace the part of your car that is damaged, the costs may go up significantly. The repair shop may use new parts or aftermarket parts to repair your vehicle. That decision is up to you after you discuss the estimate for repairs. Normally with auto body repair the damage is estimated to be from minor to severe. Minor damage can be repaired with tools that the auto body shop uses daily like a sander, rubber mallet or dent pullers. If major damage needs to be repaired, the damaged part may need to be replaced.

Auto body repair can be costly. Your car insurance may cover the damage, saving you the out-of-pocket expense. If not, then your cost may be substantial. The car’s repair is based on the estimate. The estimate includes a thorough check up on the cars exterior and interior. Any damage done to one area of your car could have caused additional damage to another area. Also the interior may have suffered damage during the accident as well.

The car will be measured for frame damage. If there is frame damage, the costs might be exorbitant, if you can find an auto body shop that will work on it. Straightening frames is often considered to be difficult if not impossible to return the car to operating capacity. The frame may be weakened and no longer safe to drive. If frame damage has occurred the auto body shop must use a frame straightener, which is a large machine that uses hydraulics to pull the frame and reshape it. Frames that are badly warped are considered totaled and are not repairable.

Your insurance company may provide the first estimate. When you take it to the auto body shop they’ll look it over and give you their estimate as well. There may be a difference between the two estimates. If there is you will have a list of the repairs needed to compare the estimates. Auto body repair will often see areas that the insurance company may have missed, increasing the costs of repair. The auto body shop will discuss the different estimate with them and arrive at an understanding about the final repairs. If they can’t agree you may need to take your car to get another estimate from another body shop.

Many people think getting multiple estimates guarantees a cheaper price. The ideal way to get your car repaired is to find a reliable shop with a good reputation and one that provides a warranty on their repairs. The cost may be higher, but if the workmanship is good, you’ll only need to repair the car once. That’s a savings in repair costs and inconvenience.
Auto body repair can be expensive, but driving a car that operates properly and does not have frame damage is safer driving. Whether you get an estimate from the insurance company or multiple auto body shops, the final estimate will include whatever needs to be repaired or replaced. Choosing new parts straight from the manufacturer may be the safest choice over aftermarket parts. However, if the price is prohibitive for new parts, the mechanics should know how to restore your car to its original shape with any good quality parts that are purchased.
